When is the best time to ski? When do you see the best value for your dollar? When are the slopes the least crowded? Well the answer to all these questions may be early January-mid February. From just after the New Years break until the Presidents week holiday in February (the week of the 14-23 this year) most resorts have value season prices in place. Add on the one night free night specials, and one ski day free specials that are out there and you can rack up the discounts quick! Most resorts will also discount midweek periods (Sun-Thu) pretty heavily during this time.
Traveling outside the busy weeks will not just save you money, it will also save you time in the lift line, lunch line, and the wait for a table at your favorite restaurant! Since a good portion of the destination ski market has kids, these weeks when just about everyone under the age of 22 is in class means there are less people traveling in general. Not only does this make for a great ski trip, but if you are flying, your flights may not be as likely to be overbooked.
Snowfall is easily one of the most important aspects of your ski vacation, and January and February are typically the two snowiest months of the ski season. Why wait until March when you can ski all the fresh snow right when it is falling! Sure it can be cold in January, but you will still be comfortable if you bring that extra layer of Merino wool!
